It's my birthday tomorrow!

My birthdays used to be a time of reflection but now, I just enjoy every single day as it comes. I am happy where I am in life and happy to see each day in good health. I am no longer focused on achievements and disappointments. I dedicate my time now to being happy and making the most of what I have now. I surround myself with amazing friends and family. I appreciate life! I appreciate my life. There is only one life and it is so short!

Me in Kampala

I am still working on a lot of things. I believe that I will eventually get there. I will eventually make a change in the world. I have a lot to learn and I am still learning.

Grace Mugabe reported to have assualted a 20 year old model

Picture culled from bbc.co.uk

The saying that goes "power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely" comes to mind when I read this story.  Finally, after much negotiation, the Zimbabwean first lady Grace Mugabe has handed herself over to police after she allegedly assaulted a 20-year-old model with an extension cord. She is expected to appear in court later on Tuesday.

According to the alleged victim, Gabriella Engels, she was visiting Mugabe’s two sons Robert and Chatunga at the Capital 20 West Hotel whom she met through a mutual friend on Saturday.

Engels said a bodyguard asked her and a friend to wait in a separate room before Mugabe allegedly started beating her.

"When Grace entered I had no idea who she was. She walked in with an extension cord and just started beating me with it,"

Engels said Mugabe accused her of living with her sons.

"She flipped and just kept beating me with the plug. Over and over. I had no idea what was going on. I was surprised… I needed to crawl out of the room before I could run away.

"Her ten bodyguards just stood there watching, no one did anything, no one tried to help me."

Engels said hotel staff escorted her out of the hotel. She immediately tried to open a case of assault at the Sandton police station.

A police officer, however, advised her to seek medical attention first.

"There was blood everywhere. Over my arms, in my hair, everywhere."

She opened a case of assault against the 52-year-old Mugabe on Monday afternoon.

Poem - Ozubulu Massacre, Nigeria

A tragic event happened recently in the eastern part of Nigeria where gunmen went into a church, St. Philip’s Catholic Church, opened fire and killed many worshippers. As I looked at the pictures of those who lost their lives sprawled all over social media and the internet, I wonder what justice they would get. The town, Ozubulu, will never be the same and it will take a long time for the town to heal. One of the unfortunate things is that there is no psychological or emotional help when such tragedies happen in Nigeria. The people will just have to deal with tragedy, emotional distress and trauma the way they know how to - weeping!

They say, wipe your tears away
You have cried too much
Weeping, crying and wailing are becoming synonymous with your being
Yet, the tears keep rolling down
It won't stop
The heart is broken
But they say, wipe your tears away

Wipe your tears away, they say
Tears will not bring back the dead
Tears will not erase the incident
Have faith that they died in the house of God, they say
One thing that made sense was when they said "your children are no longer in this horrible world"
Not part of this hell we call home
Not part of  the suffering of this world

Tears will never bring the evil people that committed this offence to justice
Tears will not bring back the dead
Tears will not stop evil from happening and men from killing one another
But the tears are a way of healing
The only way that I know

Nigeria - Mass arrests for 'homosexual acts' in Lagos State

According to the papers, more than 40 men have been arrested for ‘performing homosexual acts’ and are due to appear in court later. According to reports, the police raided a hotel in Lagos State on Saturday afternoon. Homosexual acts are punishable by up to 14 years in jail in Nigeria, while gay marriage and displays of same-sex affection are also banned.

I just wonder why no person has been apprehended for the killing of families in Ikorodu, Lagos. A young girl was raped and murdered in Lagos some days ago and yet, no one has been apprehended. No politician has been successfully brought to justice for embezzling the country's funds. Every day, the Nigerian masses cry out for justice but nothing seems to be done. There are huge problems facing the country, from perennial killings by Boko Haram to calls for secession. There are issues of youth unemployment, poverty, lack of infrastructure and basic amenities, however, people still find what people do in the confines of their private life 'wrong'. How is it anyone's business what happens in a bedroom and how does it affect the growth of the nation? In the scheme of things, should the country not focus on the bigger picture such as developing infrastructures, investing in education and health facilities?
