Attitude towards depression

Just thinking why people around me do not acknowledge that depression is a serious matter and also affects Christians. It seems every time the topic comes up, it is either hushed or people say 'it is not an African disease or just claim the word of God'. It seems it is even a thing of Shame when one acknowledges that they are suffering from depression. By the way, I am not depressed. I just happen to know close people who are.

Naomi Campbell: Black Beauty

Naomi Campbell

Skin bleaching

I read an article online which was quite enlightening. The article was discussing about why some women bleach their skin

Irene Before

After

Irene, a former model, originally from Cameroon, admits that she regularly uses skin lightening creams and says when her skin is lighter, she feels prettier. In the same article, Elsa, 27, agrees that the lighter a lady, the more she is considered beautiful. Elsa who is said to be Irene's younger sister, states that ‘being lighter shows you belong to a different place on the social ladder. According to her, all the rich, successful black African men marry either a white or a very light-skinned girl because they too grew up thinking that the lighter is the most pretty. Elsa mentions that this line of thought is widely believed by many young black girls.

I really do not understand why this is the case. I spoke to a friend about this and she said to me that there is some truth in this. She said to me that many times, one sees some successful black men with light skinned women and same case goes for some black women. She said to me that the case is not limited to black men to also to black women. She said that this line of thought is rife within some black women. According to my friend, there is this competition among some black women revolving on whom is more white for example, who has the most white friends, talks like and behaves like a white lady. Another friend said that some young black women feel that by marrying a white man that they are no longer in the same league as other black women and have this superiority complex about them.

I found all that was said a bit of a shock. These insinuations on their own are just mere opinions and not substantiated by research but if this really goes on then I am in shock and must be so naive. It shows that slave trade mentality still goes on and it is a shame that some young black women cannot see themselves as beautiful and accept themselves as they are.

Does a smile make a difference?

I was listening to the radio yesterday morning and the presenter was saying talking about the effect of smiling. According to a study, a smile does make a difference. The presenter said for listeners to start smiling. I was in my car smiling and then busted out laughing. Wow , it worked! The presenter also said that giving someone a smile can make their day. For me, it does not hurt giving someone a smile but I find that some people are so miserable and a smile does not lighten them up. In fact, it has the opposite effect. The look of misery on their faces when one gives them a smile can leave a negative effect on the smile giver if care is not taken.

I love to smile and I do that quite a lot. I have given people a smile and sometimes, they just look at me as a piece of dirt but I have said to myself that it will not stop me from smiling. One never knows who needs to see that smile.

Now, go ahead and give us some smile.

What is the world turning to?

Who is wondering what is happening in the world we live in? What is happening to mankind? So much evil going on in the world. So much pain caused by humans on their fellow humans. I question whether some human beings find pleasure in causing inexplicable harm to their fellow human beings. From the happenings in Ukrian to those in Africa (Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya). I am weary to read the papers or just listen to the news because it is just filled with evil report. It is so heartbreaking to see and hear so much evil happening in the world we live in.

Ghanaians ask for asylum in Brazil

Ghana is one of the most stable and growing economies in Africa. Yet, there are some who think the grass is greener elsewhere.

Brazilian federal police say that some 200 Ghanaians have requested asylum after entering the country on tourist visas to watch the World Cup.
The Ghanaians say they are Muslims fleeing inter-religious conflicts in their home country.
They have filed their applications in the southern city of Caxias do Sul, in one of Brazil's most prosperous areas.
Another 1,000 Ghanaians are expected to request refugee status once the tournament is over, police said.
The Brazilian authorities believe many of the Ghanaians are looking for the right to work legally in the country.

Unmasked: Champagne-loving conman who made £2m tricking elderly with bogus lottery.

 Frank Onyeachonam

His property in Lagos

Frank Onyeachonam targeted elderly victims to pay for his love of the high life – lavishing his illegal earnings on fast cars, designer clothes and luxury watches.

He won his nickname because of his taste for champagne, insisting on drinking a brand named Ace Of Spades as he mingled in exclusive members’ clubs.

But his crimes left behind a string of desperate victims, stripped of their savings, mentally wrecked and often estranged from their families.

Onyeachonam, suspected of being the British frontman of an international gang, defrauded dozens of victims of at least £2million but maybe as much as £30million.

He tricked them into thinking they had won the Australian lottery but had to pay him to ‘unlock their winnings’.

His dupes ended up giving him between £2,000 and £600,000 apiece, despite never having bought any Australian lottery tickets.

One 69-year-old victim, from Crawley, West Sussex, was left with debts of £90,000.
Onyeachonam, 38, bragged online about his wealth – spelling out his name in bank notes in a Facebook photo.

As well as buying designer outfits and stocking his fridge with £500 bottles of champagne, he bought two homes in his native Nigeria. When police raided his Canary Wharf flat in London, they found notes describing victims as ‘old’, ‘poor’ and ‘cripple’, the Old Bailey heard.
Two co-defendants – Lawrencia Emenyonu, 51, and Bernard Armah, 38 – were jailed for 18 months and eight months respectively.

A girl was filmed giving oral sex to 24 men in Magaluf thought she would win a holiday, it has been claimed.

The mayor of the Spanish party island condemned the footage and said police were investigating the incident.

The woman in the video is reportedly a 21-year-old from Co Armagh in Northern Ireland.

It has been claimed she was told she would win a ‘holiday’ if she performed the sex acts, only to be given a £4 cocktail of the same name.

Sudan death row woman 're-arrested'

This is really getting ridiculous. After Sudanese government confirmed that Meriam has been freed, news coming in now states otherwise.

Meriam has been detained with her family at Khartoum airport, sources have told the BBC.
Meriam Ibrahim was sentenced to hang in May for renouncing Islam, sparking widespread outrage at home and abroad.
About 40 security agents detained Mrs Ibrahim - along with her husband, Daniel Wani and two children - at the airport, the sources said.
On Monday, Mr Wani said the family intended to leave for the US.
Mrs Ibrahim was released from prison after an appeal court annulled the death sentence imposed on her.

BREAKING NEWS: Sudanese mother sentenced to death for 'converting to Christianity' freed after international outcry

Great news!!!

Ms Ibrahim and husband Daniel Wani

A court in Sudan today ordered the release of the 27-year-old woman sentenced to death last month for converting from Islam to Christianity, the state news agency said. A government official had told Reuters on May 31 that Sudanese officials were working to release Ibrahim.

Ms Ibrahim, born in eastern Sudan's Gedaref state on November 3, 1987, is the daughter of a Sudanese Muslim father and an Ethiopian Orthodox Christian mother, according to a statement from the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Khartoum obtained last week by AFP.

Her father abandoned the family when she was five, and she was raised according to her mother's faith, it says.

'She has never been a Muslim in her life,' said the statement signed by Father Mussa Timothy Kacho, episcopal vicar for Khartoum. Miss Ibrahim joined the Catholic church shortly before she married the Mr Wani in December 2011, the vicar said.

Mr Wani was born in Khartoum but is now a U.S. citizen, the U.S. embassy confirmed to AFP last Tuesday.

South African Man Eats Heart of Ex Girlfriend’s New Lover

I am yet to understand the rationale of some human beings. I just read that a man in South Africa has been arrested by authorities when he was found using a knife and fork to eat the heart of his ex-girlfriend’s new lover.

According to what police told BBC Africa, the 62-year old victim was stabbed in the chest and neck, and had a bite mark on his face.

The suspect who is a Zimbabwean national, was found in the Gugulethu township near Cape Town. He will be formally charged in court on Thursday or Friday.

One witness stated that “It was very gruesome. It’s definitely a love triangle”

Morale of this real life story is never give up no matter how many knock backs, rejections or 'NO' you get. Keep focused and you will surely achieve your dreams. This story shows it happens. Well done Eimear McBride.

Inspiring word

A friend shared this with me and I loved it. I hope you find some inspiration from it too.

One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried pitifully for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do.
Finally, he decided the animal was old,and the well needed to be covered up anyway; it just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey.
He invited all his neighbours to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well.
At first, the donkey realised what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement he quieted down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well. He was astonished at what he saw.
With each shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing.
He would shake it off and take a step up. As the farmer's neighbours continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and happily trotted off!

MORAL:
Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt.
The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up.
Each of our troubles is a stepping stone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up!
Shake it off and take a step up.

Remember the five simple rules to be happy:
1. Free your heart from hatred - Forgive.
2. Free your mind from worries - Most never happens.
3. Live simply and appreciate what you have.
4. Give more.
5. Expect less from people but -more from God.
Beloved, being happy doesn't mean everything's perfect. It means you've decided to see beyond the imperfections.

Wow!!! Nearly a third of people in Britain admit being racially prejudiced, research has suggested.

Social research organisation NatCen said the proportion had increased since the start of the century, returning to the level of 30 years ago.

Its British Social Attitudes survey found 30% of more than 2,000 people polled described themselves as either "very" or "a little" race prejudiced.

Wife set to hang for marrying Christian U.S. citizen gives birth to baby girl in squalid jail

Remember this story?  Meriam Ibrahim gave birth five days early after months shackled to floor. She has spent the past four months shackled to the floor in a disease-ridden jail.
The baby was born in the hospital wing at Omdurman Federal Women’s Prison in North Khartoum and is said to be healthy.

Meriam Ibrahim and husband Daniel Wani

Meriam, 27, was sentenced to death by hanging earlier this month after being found guilty of converting from Islam to Christianity and marrying a Christian man, U.S. citizen Daniel Wani, who lives in Manchester, New Hampshire.

She will receive 100 lashes before she is executed - sometime in the next two years.

Before the birth, Meriam made the defiant claim that she would rather die than give up her faith.

I think it is time we all begin to raise awareness anyway/how we can on this situation. We want the relevant organisations, countries, lawyers, campaigners, anyone who can help free this woman and her kids to see this and rise up and help. Let us not keep quiet and let this woman die.
