Couple having sex in Printworks cinema avoid jail but face 'public humiliation' and a fine

A couple caught having sex in a Manchester city centre cinema have avoided jail, but will face ‘public humiliation’ for their lurid behaviour - and a hefty fine.

Anne Abberley and Liam Thornborough

Anne Abberley and Liam Thornborough were watching Batman vs Superman at the Odeon in The Printworks when they got ‘carried away’ after kissing on the third row.

The pair were first spotted by staff on CCTV cameras used to tackle film piracy at the screening on May 19 at around 4.40pm.

Prosecuting, Robin Lynch told Manchester Magistrates’ Court when an usherette approached them she realised they were having sex although the six other people behind them had apparently not spotted the goings-on and were still watching the film.

When they were asked to leave, Thornborough, 36, became aggressive and refused to budge, claiming he was still watching the film. He then ‘flicked out’, hitting the usherette in the face.

Security were then asked to remove the pair from the cinema before police were called and they were arrested.

Mr Lynch told the court Abberley, 47, and Thornborough shouted and verbally abused Printworks security before being detained by officers.

Abberley was ordered to pay a £20 victim surcharge and costs of £85.

Thornborough will have to cough up a £20 victim surcharge for outraging public decency and court costs of £85. He was also hit with a £60 fine for the assault charge - and will have to pay £100 to the usherette.

All the cash will be deducted from the couple’s benefits.
