Seretse Khama was the grandson of grandfather was Kgosi (King) Khama III, known as Khama the Good, the ruler of the Bangwato people. During his time in Oxford studying Law, he met and fell in love with Ruth Williams, the daughter of a retired army officer. His uncle was not happy with him marrying a white lady and asked him to divorce her. Of course, he refused. He was deeply in love with his wife and so was she.
After a series of events, Seretse was exiled to
England. 5 years later, he and his wife
were allowed back to Bechuanaland but as normal citizens. He made a political
come back and during his rule, Botswana’s economy, administration and relations
with other Black African states were repaired and developed. During his time as
President Botswana had the fastest growing economy in the world. It was a
period of much civil strife in Africa, but Botswana remained free from war and
